About

​I am a professor at the University of Houston's Honors College where I teach Russian and European history. In 2020, I received the University of Houston Provost’s Teaching Excellence Award, and some other awards for my teaching and lecturing.

My research over the past several years has been supported by fellowships from Columbia University, New York University (where my PhD is from), the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, the Jordan Center for the Advanced Study of Russia, Fulbright, the U.S. Department of State, the University of Houston, and a few other institutions.

Before becoming a professor, I lived in Russia several times, Germany once, worked on a cattle ranch in North Dakota, and sailed around the Pacific Rim. I also like to ride my bike.
